English language for Eastern European arrivals

Anspear worked with Kent County Council’s Minority Communities Achievement Service (MCAS) to enhance their English language learning provision for ethnic minority communities. Twenty members of an English language class, hosted by Vale View Primary School, Dover and provided by Dover District Council’s Community Development Team, used Nokia 6303i phones loaded with Anspear English resources with family members as a way to build on their classroom learning. The majority of the group was from Latvia, with others from Lithuania, Russia, Armenia, Hungary, Ukraine and Estonia.

The project aimed to establish the extent to which mobile learning can accelerate the rate of English language acquisition, and how this impacts on the confidence of learners to participate in community events, access public services, and particularly to engage more fully with their children’s schools.

The project will be evaluated by looking at data from the phones on how the resources have been used, including learner scores and progress. Data from questionnaires with participants will provide an insight into the broader social outcomes of the project. The project began in October 2010 and will run until January 2011.
