BA (Hons) degrees in Education
Two pioneering degree programmes tackling the teacher recruitment and retention crisis and opening the doors to higher education for TAs.
Transforming access to teacher training
The BA (Hons) Primary Education and the BA (Hons) Secondary Education (Maths and SEND) are innovative, online degrees developed by Anspear in collaboration with the University of Buckingham. Specifically designed for teaching assistants without a degree who aspire to become teachers, the programmes address the growing recruitment and retention challenges in schools. They are opening the doors to higher education for learners who might never have considered university.
Primary Education
This three-year BA degree course is designed for those working as teaching assistants in schools who wish to become primary or prep school teachers. You need a degree to become a qualified teacher and what better degree to take than one in education. Students go on to take a one-year QTS course after graduating.
Secondary Education (Maths and SEND)
This course has been designed to address the shortage of good maths teachers in secondary schools. A third of pupils fail maths GCSE and many of these are SEND students. This course recognises that better outcomes are possible when teachers are trained in SEND as well as Maths.

Flexible study
These flexible programmes are built for teaching assistants already working full-time in schools. Students continue in their roles, earning their salary while studying and still complete their degree within the standard three years.
Affordable study
Delivered entirely online, these degrees cost only half as much as a traditional campus-based courses. Students continue to earn while studying as well, making it one of the most cost-effective routes into teaching.
Accessible study
The courses make higher education accessible to those who might not otherwise consider university. As well as well-designed content we supply all students with a Chromebook, ensuring equitable access to technology.
Impact and outcomes
Recruitment for the degree has exceeded all expectations. Hundreds of teaching assistants are now enrolled – many pursuing a degree they may never have otherwise considered – and many are now on the path to becoming qualified teachers. The University has successfully expanded and diversified its student body through this groundbreaking programme, which is making a genuine contribution to social mobility.
Student satisfaction
Students consistently praise the course structure, the level of support they receive and the AI-powered feedback built into the learning app. The format has proved highly motivating, engaging and empowering for learners balancing work and study.
University success story
The programme is now fully embedded within the Faculty of Education and has become one of its flagship offerings. Anspear is proud to be a trusted partner in its delivery, working closely with the University as part of a cohesive academic and operational team.

To anyone else considering this course I would encourage them to go for it. You will not regret the opportunity to not only study to help you become a teacher – one of the most important roles in society – you will also get to do it at your own pace with a wealth of knowledge, experience and support available to help you.

Delivery partnerships
Our BA degrees in Education with the University of Buckingham can form a key part of a new teacher development pathway, guiding learners from Year 13 to TA roles and on to Qualified Teacher Status. Multi-Academy Trusts can use the programmes to attract and retain talent, embedding it into their long-term recruitment strategy.
We support this by:
- Recruiting future teachers directly from Year 13 and current TAs.
 - Involving MATs in course delivery through tutor recruitment from their own staff for academic and pastoral support.
 - Providing joint support from both Anspear and the University throughout the student journey.
